VA Moves to Extend Caregiver Program for Veterans and Families

The proposed rule would maintain benefits for legacy participants while program updates are finalized.

The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) announced plans to propose a rule extending eligibility for the Program of Comprehensive Assistance for Family Caregivers (PCAFC) through September 30, 2028. The extension will apply to legacy participants and applicants, veterans, service members, and their caregivers involved with the program as of September 30, 2020, or those who applied before October 1, 2020 and were later approved. This move ensures continued access to benefits for nearly 15,000 individuals while the VA completes the rulemaking process directed at updating and refining the program.

The program is part of the VA’s broader Caregiver Support Program and provides a range of services for family caregivers of Veterans who experienced serious service-related injuries. These services include training, respite care, counseling, technical support, a monthly stipend, travel reimbursement, and health coverage through the Civilian Health and Medical Program of the VA.

“Legacy caregivers have helped shape VA’s Caregiver Support Program for many years,” said VA Secretary Doug Collins. “This decision underscores VA’s commitment to Veterans and caregivers across the nation and will help provide consistency and stability to nearly 15,000 legacy participants for years to come.”

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For Secretary Collins and VA officials as they seek to ensure the best continued care for veterans.
  • For the Lord’s blessing on the U.S. veterans who need the care and the caregivers who are looking after them.
